Dr. Hammer is an associate clinical professor in the department of orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received his B.A. degree from Harpur College, State University of New York in 1959, his D.D.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dentistry in 1963 and completed his graduate training in orthodontics at the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 1970 receiving a Master of Science degree.

Dr. Hammer is a retired United States Army Reserve Officer, holding the rank of Colonel and is a recipient of numerous awards including the Bronze Star, Combat Medical Badge and Military Medical Award of Merit. He is past president of the Hawaii Dental Association and the Hawaii Society of Orthodontics and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Hammer holds fellowships in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry International.
